Disinfecting

Disinfecting works by using chemicals to kill pathogens on surfaces or objects. This process does not necessarily clean dirty surfaces or remove pathogens, but by killing pathogens on a surface after cleaning, it can further lower the risk of spreading infection. Disinfecting only works on hard, non-porous surfaces.

Sanitizing

Sanitizing is the use of a chemical or device (like dishwasher or a steam mop) that reduces the number of pathogens on surfaces or objects to a safe level, as judged by public health standards or requirements. This process works by either cleaning or disinfecting surfaces or objects to lower the risk of spreading infection. Sanitizing kills most pathogens, but not all. Most sanitizers, as well as disinfectants, require a clean surface to be effective at killing pathogens.

Cleaning

Cleaning reduces pathogens, dirt, and impurities from surfaces or objects by removing them. Cleaning works by using soap (or detergent) and water to physically remove pathogens from surfaces. This process does not necessarily kill pathogens, but by removing them, it lowers their numbers and the risk of spreading infection.

Cleaning is also a necessary first step toward disinfecting in most cases. Cleaning has been shown to reduce up to 98% of bacteria and 93% of viruses from surfaces in EPA tests. Cleaning also removes dust, molds, irritants and allergens that can trigger asthma.

Fumigation

Fumigation is the process of using chemical smoke to kill pests like insects or rodents. An infestation of termites in your house might mean you have to resort to fumigation.
